Our Introduction to Scrambling Course is perfect for competent hill walkers who are looking to explore steeper mountain terrain. Our aim over the 2 days is to give you both the knowledge and the confidence to independently enjoy grade 1 scrambles throughout the UK.
You will learn movement techniques, emergency ropework and route selection in a practical and realistic mountain journey of around grade 1 difficulty.
This course is for anyone who already has experience as a hill walker. We are likely to be out on the hill for 6-8 hours each day and so a reasonable level of fitness is required. No experience of any scrambling is needed. Throughout the course we will help you develop the skills needed to get out and enjoy grade 1 scrambles on your own. Examples of grade one scrambles throughout the UK include; Tryfan and Crib Goch in Snowdonia, Striding Edge and Sharp Edge in The Lake District, and The CMD Arete, The Horns of Alligin and The Ring of Steall in Scotland.
Our Scrambling Courses take place in and around the Torridon Mountains. This area is famous for its excellent scrambling therefore it is a fantastic place to learn. With no shortage of brilliant routes at a variety of grades, you will have plenty of opportunity to practice and refine your skills.. All within a realistic and inspirational environment. The largest village in the area is Gairloch, with excellent local facilities and amenities, including B&Bs, self catering, hotels, shops, pubs and takeaways.
We will start the day looking at equipment and kit. Very little additional equipment is needed for grade 1 scrambling. However, sometimes understanding the importance of small details within your usual hill walking kit (e.g. the type of rubber on boots), can be both interesting and useful. Then we will head straight out into the mountains and undertake a grade 1 journey. Throughout the day we will discuss movement and our movement skills on a variety of different terrain, as well as the importance of route selection. We will also look at spotting (simple techniques that can be used to assist any scrambling companion).
Today we will venture out into grade 1 terrain again (possibly touching on short sections of grade 2). However, we will be looking to refine our current skills as well as practice for emergency situations or for escaping a route. You will learn some basic emergency ropework as well as techniques useful in downclimbing.
In order to provide the highest level of learning and safety we maintain low ratios for our courses. Below you can see the details. Small numbers allow us to make sure you get the tuition you need and the course is tailored around your aspirations.
